Ambrose Rachier Gears Up for Re-Election in Gor Mahia’s April 13 Polls

Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier has officially thrown his hat in the ring for re-election as the club prepares for its much-anticipated elections set for April 13, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Rachier laid out the club’s election roadmap and made it clear that he is ready to defend his seat. He cited the club’s 2019 constitution and a Sports Tribunal ruling from January 15, 2025, which he believes gives him the green light to seek what he calls his ‘second term’ in office.

The elections will be held during Gor Mahia’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium, starting at 7:00 AM.

Rachier remains confident in his bid and is unshaken by critics, stating, “I am fully in the race. I have gone through Regulation 20, and the club’s 2019 constitution is very clear. We held the first elections in 2020, served our first four-year term, and now we are eligible for a second term.”

Addressing those opposing his re-election, he remained unfazed, emphasizing that football success remains Gor Mahia’s top priority. He even challenged his critics to take legal action if they felt otherwise.

With a record 21 Kenyan Premier League titles, K’Ogalo remains the most decorated club in Kenya. The club also holds the unique distinction of being the only Kenyan team to have won a continental title, having lifted the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987, after finishing as runners-up in 1979.

However, the road to these elections has been bumpy, marred by court battles and internal wrangles. The delays forced Sports Registrar Rose Wasike to order the club to hold elections within 90 days, putting pressure on Gor Mahia to resolve its leadership matters swiftly.

For anyone eyeing a position in Gor Mahia’s leadership, there’s a strict checklist to meet:

✅ Must be 18 years or older
✅ Hold a valid national ID or passport
✅ Be a registered Gor Mahia club member
✅ Submit a duly filled nomination form
✅ Obtain clearance from key government bodies, including:

  • The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
  • Credit Reference Bureau (CRB)
  • Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)
  • Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)
  • Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been tasked with conducting the elections. This comes after their successful oversight of the Nairobi Club elections, further strengthening confidence in their ability to deliver a free and fair process.

As April 13 inches closer, the race for Gor Mahia’s top seat is heating up. With Rachier officially in the running, all eyes are now on potential challengers who may emerge to shake up the contest.

Will the long-serving chairman hold onto power, or will a new leader take charge of Kenya’s most historic football club? Time will tell.
