Back in Action: Kasarani Stadium to Host Games Ahead of CHAN 2025

Big news for Kenyan football fans! After months of anticipation and renovation, Kasarani Stadium is almost ready to open its gates once again—and it’s coming back in a big way.

Starting June, Kasarani is set to host test matches in preparation for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is now scheduled for August 2025. The announcement was made by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, who visited the stadium earlier this week to check on the renovation progress.

During the inspection, Mvurya expressed excitement about the stadium’s transformation and emphasized its importance in reviving the local football scene.

“From June, matches—whether international or local—will be played here. We’re bringing football back to the people, and the energy we’ve seen from recent games proves that Kenya is ready,” he shared with Citizen Digital.

The New Kasarani Facelift

A Revival of Kenya’s Football Venues

This move comes after Nyayo Stadium also reopened, hosting a successful 2026 World Cup Qualifier match in March. The return of these venues signals a strong rebound for Kenyan football, both in terms of infrastructure and fan experience.

Kasarani and Nyayo are among the key stadiums set to host the CHAN 2025 tournament, a major continental event that was initially postponed in February. With Kenya co-hosting CHAN alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the government has ramped up efforts to ensure that our facilities meet international standards.

Kipchoge Keino Stadium Also Back on Track

CS Mvurya also gave an encouraging update on Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Uasin Gishu County, another important venue under renovation. After delays related to contractor issues, the project is now moving forward.

“The contractor’s payment was processed last Friday, so there’s no reason for further delays. Work is continuing to full completion,” he confirmed.

Eyes on AFCON 2027

Beyond CHAN, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are also preparing to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027—a monumental achievement for East African football. With such high-stakes tournaments on the horizon, renovating and upgrading stadiums has become a top priority.

Final Whistle

From dusty pitches to world-class arenas, Kenyan football is getting a long-overdue facelift—and fans have every reason to be excited. With Kasarani set to host games from June, the countdown to CHAN is officially on. The stage is almost set… now we just wait for kickoff.
