Benni McCarthy, the newly appointed head coach of the Kenya national football team (Harambee Stars), has shared key reasons behind his decision to take up the role, despite interest from clubs in South Africa, Europe, and the United States.
The former Manchester United first-team coach was widely linked with a return to his native South Africa, particularly with Kaizer Chiefs, as well as other coaching opportunities abroad. However, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) secured McCarthy’s services in a surprise move that has sparked optimism across Kenyan football.
Why Benni McCarthy Chose Kenya Over South Africa and Europe
In an interview with CGTN Africa, McCarthy said the project presented by FKF was both ambitious and long-term, which aligned with his coaching goals.
“I thought it was a great opportunity. It’s a prosperous country with a very ambitious new federation,” said McCarthy.
“The project they sold me was that they want to build a team from now until 2027, when they host the African Nations Cup.”
With Kenya set to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the 46-year-old tactician was inspired by the vision of building a competitive team for the continental showpiece.
“They want to be able to compete and establish a strong foothold in African football. The foundation of players they have is really good, and my team and I believe we can make a difference,” McCarthy added.
McCarthy’s Vision for Harambee Stars Ahead of AFCON 2027
McCarthy sees the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a defining moment for Kenyan football. His goal is not just to prepare for the tournament, but to take Harambee Stars to a level they’ve never reached before on the continental stage.
“We could have a strong say in how the tournament unfolds and how far we can take Kenya — somewhere they’ve never been before,” he emphasized.
The decision to join Harambee Stars marks a significant shift in McCarthy’s coaching career, especially after working with elite players in the English Premier League.

Building Momentum: Upcoming Competitions for Harambee Stars
Before AFCON 2027, McCarthy will guide Kenya through key tournaments, starting with the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) this August — a critical stage for testing and developing the squad.
He has already overseen two 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, a 3-3 draw against Gambia and a narrow 2-1 defeat to Gabon — results that showcased the attacking intent and areas of improvement under his leadership.
Kenya’s Football Future Under Benni McCarthy
With the FKF Premier League heating up and the national team undergoing a rebuild, McCarthy’s appointment signals a bold new era for Kenyan football. The combination of local talent, international experience, and a clear long-term goal puts the Harambee Stars on a promising path ahead of AFCON 2027.
As Kenya prepares to step into the continental spotlight, all eyes will be on Benni McCarthy and whether he can turn potential into performance — and write a new chapter in the nation’s football history.
